The famous beach is only a stone's throw away from many of Sydney's famous sites, the Sydney Opera House and the Sydney Harbour Bridge are all easily accessible from this most famous beach suburb.
In January 2008 Bondi Beach Australia was added to the National heritage list now sitting beside Australian places such as Kakadu, the Sydney Opera House, Uluru as places central to the Australian psyche, culture and history. It is being honoured for its role in Australian Surf Life Saving and beach culture. Peter Garrett the Environment, Heritage and Arts Minister said
'What can be more Australian than Bondi Beach? The sun, the sand, the lifesavers, the sense of place that is so strong here,'
'This is a fantastic day for the Beach and it's fantastic to see it recognised in this way.'
Everyone is welcome at Bondi
Good news for the 'Bondi Caveman' the man who shares beach views with millionaires is allowed to stayed perched in his cliff side camp overlooking Bondi Beach.
Jhyimy "Two Hats" Mhiyles - the so-called Caveman, came to Sydney for the 2000 Olympic Games and ended up setting up a cliff side home with multi-million dollar views. He has become something of a local celebrity for his lifestyle, poetry recitals and nature loving demeanor.
Jhyimy said 'If you remove yourself to the extremity of land's ledge and that's still not good enough, and people come down and deliberately go out of their way to stir you up and tell you you're taking up too much room in Australia, where would you go? What would you do?
