Jan 23, Australia Day

Bondi is sure to be busy for this long weekend culminating in Australia Day celebrations.

Why not think of attending Bondi Open Air Cinema at the Pavilion this year. The ocean-edged festival is one the best ways to enjoy Australia day and summer.

This year on Australia Day the Open Air cinema will be screening Baz Luhrmann's Australia. The film tells the story of an English aristocrat woman who travels to the 'Faraway Downs' and joins forces with a rough-hewn drover to herd 2,000 head of cattle across hundreds of miles of the country's most unforgiving terrain. Their marathon journey reaches a new level of hardship when they get caught up in the Japanese bombing of Darwin.

On the night there will be plenty of other entertainment including live music, patrons can bring there own picnic but alcohol can be purchased inside the pavilion grounds. Sometimes its a good idea to bring a blanket but with the sweltering Sydney Temperatures at present it might not be needed.

Jan 18, Bondi Jitterbug

The work of amateur photographer, champion Jitterbug dancer and Bondi local George Caddy is displayed for the first time in this exhibition of 60 photographs.

These distinctive photographs document Bondi Beach during the late 1930s and early 1940s and feature parading lifesavers, leisure seekers wearing the latest beach fashions and the astonishing gymnastic feats known as beachobatics.
The negatives to these images lay hidden in a shoebox for almost 60 years until discovered by George's son.

This exhibition is free at The State Library of New South Wales and closes on February 22nd 2009
