Essentials for Backpacker Travel to Australia

Dont Leave Home without them

If you've decided to take the plunge and visit Australia as a backpacker or during your gap year, you might want to think about bringing some of the following items along. Never pack too much before you leave, a good rule of thumb is to pack you're backpack two thirds full leaving plenty of room for doing a bit of shopping when you're in Australia.

  1. T-Shirts

  2. Walking Shoes

  3. Flip Flops (called thongs in OZ)

  4. Boardies

  5. Sunglasses

  6. Sunscreen

  7. Beach Towel

  8. ToothBrush

  9. Camera

  10. Music (IPOD)

  11. Books - especially lonely Planet, check out Bill Bryson's Travel Book on Australia or Roger Sandall's Books and take on australia

  12. Tickets

  13. Passport - Dont forget to check the expiration date

  14. Visa - make sure this is done in advance so you dont have any surprises when you land in Australia

  15. Travel Insurance - better safe than sorry

  16. Student/Hostel Cards - this will help with budget accommodation

  17. Camera

  18. Coffee

  19. CV/References - only if you intend working

  20. Contact Details - leave contact details at home with people for emergencies, also photocopy all your visa, flight tickets and travel insurance documents in case they get lost

  21. Trusty Torch
